[BK399] Book - Lincolnshire's Farm Animals

Price: 9.99

A BRIEF HISTORY by Catherine Wilson OBE with Sue & Alan Stennett

Lincolnshire is the only English county that has its own native breeds of sheep, cattle, pigs and poultry and is also able to claim a large part in the development of the best known heavy horse, the Shire. Lincoln Longwool sheep, Lincoln Red Cattle, Lincoln Curly Coat pigs, and Lincolnshire Buff poultry have long graced the fields and farmyards of the county, developed and improved by dedicated breeders responding to the needs of the markets, and to fashion. In the years around 1900 all of the country's livestock breeds were recognised nationally for their quality and were being sold in quantity to markets around the world.

This booklet traces the development of each Lincolnshire Farm Animal from the earliest times to the present day. It explains the ups and downs in their fortunes, summarises their present situation and looks to the future. From a low point in the 1960s and 1970s, much work by a few dedicated individuals, enlightened marketing and better promotion through shows and breed societies have ensured that there IS a future for these special animals.
